토플 공부를 하다 보면
past simple과 past perfect를
둘 다 그냥 “과거 시제” 정도로만 이해하고 넘어가는 경우가 많습니다.
하지만 실제 영어에서는
단순히 과거를 말하는 것이 아니라,
“과거 사건들 사이의 시간 순서”
를 굉장히 중요하게 표현합니다.
특히 TOEFL Writing과 Speaking에서는
원인, 배경, 사건 흐름을 자연스럽게 설명해야 하는 경우가 많기 때문에
past perfect를 제대로 이해하지 못하면
문법은 맞아도 영어가 어색해지는 경우가 많습니다.

past perfect와 past simple 차이를
실제 영어 사용 흐름 중심으로 정리해보겠습니다.
1. Past perfect = 더 이전 과거
과거 사건들을 순서대로 설명할 때는
보통 past simple을 사용합니다.
하지만 이미 말하고 있는 과거 사건보다
더 먼저 일어난 일을 뒤늦게 설명하고 싶을 때는
past perfect를 사용합니다.
즉 영어에서는:
현재 기준 과거가 아니라
“과거 안에서의 이전 과거”
를 표현하기 위해 past perfect를 사용하는 것입니다.

2. Past perfect 반복은 필요 없습니다
영어에서는 한 번
“더 이전 사건”이라는 흐름이 잡히면
그 이후에는 굳이 계속 had p.p.를 반복하지 않는 경우가 많습니다.

3. 시간 순서가 명확하면 past simple도 가능
시간 표현이나 문맥 때문에
사건 순서가 이미 명확하다면,
past perfect 없이
past simple만 사용하는 경우도 많습니다.
즉 past perfect는
반드시 써야 하는 문법이라기보다,
시간 순서를 더 명확하게 만들고 싶을 때 사용하는 장치에 가깝습니다.

4. 과거 발언 전달할 때 사용하는 past perfect
past perfect는
누군가의 과거 생각이나 발언을 전달할 때도 자주 사용됩니다.
특히 원래 문장이:
현재완료
단순과거
였을 경우,
과거 시점에서 다시 전달하면서
past perfect로 바뀌는 경우가 많습니다.
