past simple과 present perfect를
단순히 “과거냐, 현재냐”로만 구분하고 넘어가는 경우가 많습니다.
하지만 실제 영어에서는 이 두 시제가
단순한 시간 표현이 아니라,
사건이 끝났는지 / 지금까지 이어지는지
이 기준을 구분하는 도구로 사용됩니다.
이 기준을 정확하게 이해하지 못하면
문법은 맞는데도 어딘가 어색한 문장이 나오게 되고,
특히 TOEFL Writing과 Speaking에서
점수로 이어지지 않는 답안을 만들게 됩니다.

past simple과 present perfect가
실제 어떤 상황에서 어떻게 쓰이는지를 중심으로,
토플에서 바로 적용할 수 있도록 정리해보겠습니다.
1. Past simple vs Present perfect (this morning / today 기준)
this morning, today 같은 표현은
과거시제와 현재완료가 모두 가능합니다.
핵심은 “이 시간이 끝났다고 보느냐 / 아직 이어진다고 보느냐”입니다.
끝난 시간으로 보면 → past simple
아직 진행 중이면 → present perfect

요즘 자연스러운 영어에서는 “today”와 함께 현재완료를 사용하는 경우가 많습니다. 이는 오늘이라는 시간이 아직 끝나지 않았다는 느낌을 주기 때문입니다.

2. Past simple vs Present perfect (since 구조)
since는 “~이후로 계속”이라는 의미이기 때문에
시제 구조가 거의 고정되어 있습니다.
과거의 시작점 + 지금까지 이어지는 상태
since절 → past simple
메인절 → present perfect

예외 (둘 다 현재까지 이어질 때)
두 상황이 모두 현재까지 이어지면
since절에도 현재완료를 사용할 수 있습니다.

3. Past simple vs Present perfect (시간접속사: after, when 등)
after, when, as soon as 같은 표현에서는
과거 상황인지, 미래 상황인지에 따라 시제가 달라집니다.
1) 과거 상황

4. Past simple vs Present perfect (뉴스 / 변화 전달 구조)
현재완료는
최근 변화나 새로운 사건을 소개할 때 사용됩니다.
그리고 이후에는
과거시제로 구체적인 내용을 설명합니다.
